In the fall of 2019, activists began occupying the Dannenröder Forest in Hesse to protect the forest from being cleared for the expansion of the A49 highway. In treehouses and self-built camps, a place of resistance emerged where the fight to preserve the forest merged with demands for climate justice and a transportation revolution.
The occupation was cleared by police in 2020, and large sections of the planned route were subsequently cleared. The protest in “Danni” became a widely visible symbol of the conflict between infrastructure projects and nature conservation.
